Success Training Bible Study - Genesis Chapter 12 - 23

Intro to Abraham

a success training Bible study chapters 12-23

We are given in this chapter and following chapters to see the covenant relationship, that divine-human interaction, develop. The history of the beginning of the Hebrew nation is indeed an expose of the unclear becoming clear. We see the call on a man's life but, better yet, we see the process of unfaltering obedience to that call.

We see a man, having matured in a society that was, for its day, advanced in philosophy and mathematics, called by an invisible God, whom no one to this point knew much about. We see the call of an idolater to the worship of the One True God. Our present day dilemma is as was Abram's dilemma. In order for him to answer, be obedient to, God's call, Abram had to leave this rather advanced society to journey to a much more primitive one. He had to leave the lifestyle with which he had grown familiar and trust a God whom he had never seen. He had to leave the familiar, travel through the wilderness to arrive at a new home and true prosperity. A similar circumstance faced the Disciple Peter in Matthew 14:28-30:

"Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water."

"Come," he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"

You see, in order to answer the call to 'come', Peter had to make the decision of his life. He had to step out of everything he knew to be real and into a world he knew nothing about.

We can see in this success training Bible study, even though our present day society is filled with 'religion', true belief is rare. We learn, through those who are in authority, the trappings of a religion that demands little and doesn't interfere with our 'comfort zone'. We politely smile and nod in church and then continue to live, justified in our own minds, the lifestyle with which we are more comfortable. The Holy Bible is a prop, something that we carry to church just in case we are asked to look up a passage.

The account of Abram (soon to become Abraham), when read as success training Bible study subject, inspires us to give ourselves totally and receive totally. (Well almost totally)

You see, Abram was not totally compliant with God's command. Instead of leaving his fathers household, he took his father (Terah) with him. This indiscretion cost Abram a huge delay. Do you feel sometimes that God isn't hearing your prayers. You might consider the fact that you may not have followed His instructions completely.

We know from other Bible studies and from reading and hearing about Abram that God blessed him immensely. He was definitely a man of means. But in the following pages, we'll explore why it took so long. This seems to be a trait that has been handed down through the ages. It takes so long to get the blessing because we delay in obeying.
